A unique, innovative and controversial book with a broad range market and a probable long publishing life. The book is complete – though there are editorial decisions to be made on layout and length.

The book tests whether there are any cycles that match key stages in recent human development. It examines key stages in the development of society’s ideals, technological and intellectual change, global structural change, growth and recession, ideological conflicts, terrorism and peace negotiations and finds that they match the 4 key stages in the longterm, medium term and short term cycles between the outer planets. The approach is strictly scientific and testable and uses astronomical data from NASA. 98% of the book’s content is about contemporary history between 1821 and 2061 – in particular the period since 1940 covered in detail.

This book, which has taken over 9 years to research and write, is the first ‘over-arching’ theory of history since Toynbee and Sorokin – but unlike those works it uses a scientifically based formula and is fully testable. For human events or developments to match any of these cycles they must 1) occur within 10 degrees before or after the 4 cycle stages (Synchronicity) 2) encounter a challenge at the quarter way point, reach maximum fruition at the half way point and meet a terminal challenge at the three quarter point (Sequentiality) and 3) fit the assigned single meaning of the cycle. This is a tough test to meet.

Amazingly in virtually all cases a stunning match is made – more clearly discernible in the longer than the shorter cycles. Research has been mainly confined to 4 named permanent websites, which, together with an appendix of clearly presented NASA data, allows the reader – taking a general, a journalistic or an historian’s interest – to check out the matches. This is an important part of the appeal of the book – especially when allied to an interactive website.

The book is likely to prove highly controversial for historians and many scientists – but if they reject the theory they have to read the book to do so. The book may prove anathema for Postmodernism despite the book forecasting this mindset will survive the present challenge to it. For journalists the detailed coverage of key stages in the conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran – as well as the Arab Spring and peace moves in Palestine – is a unique developmental reference for where we are at with these major crises. For the general reader the book offers a unique way of making sense of the bewildering array of developments and crises facing society today by putting them in perspective. No other book claims to do this.

An important way of looking at each planetary cycle is to see it like a seasonal cycle. At the Conjunction (0 degrees) something new is seeded, by the Out square (90 degrees) that seed has sprouted but now has to face climactic challenges, at the Opposition (180 degrees) the plant has reached maturity and can be harvested, at the In square (270 degrees) the conditions become inappropriate for the plant’s continued existence. This seeding, growth, fruition and decline sequence applies to many human endeavours from agriculture to consumer goods – as of course it does to our own lives from birth to death.

Chapter 1 Neptune/Pluto (longterm)

A cycle dealing with the transformation of collective idealism – covering huge and fundamental changes in the way human beings see their world. Can we find precisely in the period 1883 to 1899 (10 degrees either side of the 1891 conjunction) the birth or seeding of two fundamental collective ideals which could feasibly unfold over such a huge 493 year timeframe ?

Chapter 2 Uranus/Neptune (172 years)

A cycle dealing with the idealisation of intellectual and technological change. Its principal focus is new technology – past candidates for this include major society changing inventions like steam power, electricity, telecommunications – which in differing ways came to be especially idealised because of the benefits they enabled. Which 2 technologies that emerged precisely at the exact conjunction dates in 1993 are set to rise and fade as societal ideals over 172 years ?

Chapter 3 Uranus/Pluto (139 years)

A cycle dealing with the ‘transformation of intellectual innovation’ – how the methods of intellectual and technological knowledge alter in themselves. The present cycle started in 1965. Precisely between 1961 and 1970 (10 degrees either side of the 1965 conjunction) we find the birth of the Computer and its accompanying mindset – PostModernism. This cycle is not just about technology – it is more about the intellectual mindset the technology helps form. The book’s argument is that like major new technologies, new intellectual mindsets emerge in parallel every 113 to 141 years.

Chapter 4 Saturn/Uranus (45 years)

A cycle dealing with the way intellectual change affects the Status Quo’. This 1988 – 2032 cycle looks at how revolutionary ideas sweep aside the established order. The conjunction exactly matches the collapse of the Soviet Union. It also matches ‘Big Bang’ – the beginning of a cycle of financial deregulation, the rise of the Asian ‘Tiger economies’, the crushing of the pro-democracy movement in China and the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. The 2008 Opposition sees a maximisation of attempts to overthrow oppressive governments culminating in the Arab Spring (analysed in detail), the Credit crunch, major bank failures, the eurozone crisis, Asia becoming the economic powerhouse, maximum resistance in Tibet and Xingjian and the Fukushima nuclear disaster.

Chapter 5 Saturn/Neptune (37 years)

A cycle dealing with the implementation or restriction of collective ideals – in particular ideologies. This 1989 to 2026 cycle starts with the fall of Soviet Communism – indeed the rise and fall of Communism is exactly matched over 4 of these cycles starting in 1846, 1882, 1917 and 1953. At the 2006 Opposition corruption permeates the Russian government and there are numerous assassinations. In South Africa there is a surge in violent crime, in China a crackdown on the media and Tibetan protestors. In Palestine to Israel’s dismay Hamas gains control of Gaza and clashes violently with Fatah.

Chapter 6 Saturn/Pluto (33 years)

A cycle dealing with the transformation of social, political and economic structures. This 1982 to 2020 cycle is unquestionably about Fundamentalist terrorism. Precisely at the 1982 conjunction we find its beginnings in 7 violent developments in Egypt, Iran, Syria, the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps and at the US Embassy and Marine barracks in Lebanon. At the 1993 Out square comes the most remarkable correlation – the bombing of the parking garage of the New York World Trade Center. The bombers fail in their principal objective though they injure 1,000. Then precisely at this cycle’s opposition in September 2001 the same WTC’s twin towers are totally destroyed by airplanes hijacked by Islamic terrorists causing 3,000 deaths. Within the same period the US invades Iraq and unintentionally unleashes an unparalleled sectarian bloodbath.

Chapter 7 Jupiter/Saturn (20 years)

A cycle dealing with the socioeconomic actualisation of society’s expectations. In particular the cycle measures growth and recession in the economy. Both the Great Depression of the early 1930s and the Recession of the early 1990s start precisely at Jupiter/Saturn cycle oppositions. Three Jupiter/Saturn cycles are covered. The 1940 – 1961 cycle is about the formation of the UN and the emergence of the Cold War. The 1961-1980 cycle sees the Cuba crisis taking the world to the brink of global nuclear war. The 1980 to 2000 cycle is about the disintegration of the Soviet Union and the dismantling of apartheid. It starts with the legalising of Solidarity then at the opposition like a chain of dominoes, first East Germans are allowed to emigrate; Hungary’s Communist party renounces Marxism; the Berlin Wall is broken open and Czechs and East Germans end the Communist party’s 40 year monopoly. The 2000 to 2020 cycle focuses on 5 world crises – Iraq, Iran, Palestine/Israel, Afghanistan and North Korea.

Chapter 8 Jupiter/Uranus (14 years)

A cycle dealing with the relationship between technological development and society’s expectations. This is all about cutting edge innovation. Four Jupiter/Uranus cycles are covered –1968 to 1983, 1983 to 1997, 1997 to 2010 and the current 2010 to 2024 cycle. All 4 cycles have a truly stunning correlation with Space Exploration, Genetics and Medical breakthroughs. From 1997 four leading technologies of the future clearly match the four stages of the cycle – Fuel Cell and Fusion Power, Robotics and Nanotechnology

Chapter 9 Jupiter/Neptune (13 years)

A cycle dealing mainly with the relationship between collective ideals and society’s expectations. This cycle correlates with humanitarian issues and peace negotiations, along with Environmental issues but also with Epidemics. Four Jupiter/Neptune cycles are covered –1971 to 1984, 1984 to 1997, 1997 to 2009 and the current 2009 to 2022 cycle. The 1997 cycle culminates in the first major anti-globalisation protests, major oil spills, Latin America’s worst environmental disaster, massive pollution over the Indian ocean, China’s two greatest rivers declared dead zones, the shrinking of Arctic waters and the signing of the Kyoto Protocol. HIV/AIDS, Avian Flu (H5N1), Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARS) and the H1N1 pandemic also fit this cycle.

Chapter 10 Jupiter/Pluto (12 years)

A cycle dealing with the short term, often violent, transformation  society’s expectations – political and ideological upheavals – most recently Terrorism. The cycle shows an astonishing match with Assassinations, Kidnappings and Hijackings. Four Jupiter/Pluto cycles are covered – 1968 to 1981, 1981 to 1994, 1994 to 2007 and the current 2007 to 2020 cycle. But the closest correlation is with the Northern Ireland ‘Troubles’ where each of 4 successive cycles matches pivotal events. What key threshold events happened on October 5 1968, just 8 days from the 1st exact conjunction and what happened on 9 December 1994 just 7 days from the 3rd exact conjunction ? A truly stunning coincidence ?
